Roosje Henselein, 16 July 1928, 14 years old. This is the name adopted by my mother Sjaan Turkenburg, who died on 23 July 2015.
What most impressed her was that Roosje lived with her family in Ouder-Amstel. The place where Roosje lived formed a connection, and probably her age did too, since Roosje was 4 years older than my mother was at the time.
But it really doesn’t matter so much, as long as all names have a place on the Holocaust Names Memorial. For that’s the fine idea behind this initiative.
The certificate now belongs to my daughter Joyce, in loving memory of my mother and of course Roosje Henselein.
But above all, let it be a comfort to all survivors and family members who came through this tragedy and still endure, even though they bear this heavy burden on their shoulders every day.
Kind regards,
