My parents were Austrian-born Jewish refugees who fled their homeland in 1938 arriving to 'safety' in Amsterdam in August, 1938. They were lovingly taken care of by the Papegaaij family who lived on the Rapenburg (the address does not exist nowadays).
My parents Robert & Lisa Kurzbauer Amsterdam August 1938
My parents had wonderful memories of their six weeks in Amsterdam--a wedding invitation for my parents who had married hastily before they fled. They also remembered the street festivities in honour of Queen Wilhemina's 40 years in power. Fortunately, my parents were able to book passage on the SS Rotterdam and left the Netherlands in safety in the fall of 1938. I have adopted the names of several members of the Papegaaij family who were taken from their homes and murdered. May their memories be honoured forever.
