Amsterdam city hall approves Holocaust Names Memorial |

On 18 March 2014 the Mayor and Municipal Executive in Amsterdam approved the proposal to erect a Holocaust Memorial of Names in Wertheim Park and, with this resolution, instructed the Centrum urban borough to develop the project in consultation with the initiator, the Netherlands Auschwitz Committee (NAC) and to conduct a thorough public inquiry procedure as part of that development.
This resolution marks a very important step on the road to realizing the Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Names. Almost eight years ago the idea arose to erect a memorial featuring the names of all 102,000 Jews and 220 Sinti and Roma people deported from the Netherlands and killed during World War II.
“The city executive’s official approval of the construction of the Holocaust Names Memorial gives me a sense of justice,” says initiator and NAC chairman Jacques Grishaver.
The Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Nemes will be designed by Polish-American architect Daniel Libeskind. A fundraising campaign has been launched to realize the memorial. Individuals, companies and organizations can adopt one or more names on the memorial through the website www.namenmonument.nl. Money can, however, be donated without adopting a name.
The aim is to unveil the Holocaust Memorial of Names in 2015, seventy years after the end of World War II.
