Daniel Libeskind presents concept for Memorial of Names |

‘Path of Light’ is the title of Daniel Libeskind’s concept for the Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Names. “A name is also a light,” the American architect of Polish-Jewish descent said today when he presented his plan in Amsterdam together with city mayor Eberhard van der Laan.
“The memorial to those murdered by the Nazis takes the form of a path guided by their names,” said Daniel Libeskind. “Located next to the existing Holocaust memorial a new space is formed by a series of descending and ascending walls. The spaces shaped by these obliquely cut planes offer glimpses of the changing horizon – and allow visitors to read the thousands of names. It is the memory of these names that gives meaning to a path that, surrounded by nature and bordering a waterfall, creates an emotional encounter with the voices of silence.”
The design of the memorial takes into account the existing situation in the park. It accommodates several age-old trees and respects the Broken Mirror memorial by Jan Wolkers. A green area next to this memorial will be cleared to connect the existing and new memorials. A long bench of natural stone allows for rest and contemplation.
