Holocaust Memorial of Names to Weesperstraat |
13-05-2016 |
After an extensive study of possible sites for the proposed Holocaust Names Memorial, Amsterdam city council has selected a green strip on Weesperstraat. The area, at the end of Weesperstraat close to the Protestant Parish Centre, meets all the conditions set by the Dutch Auschwitz Committee in its survey of possible sites.
The Auschwitz Committee – which initiated the plan for the memorial – is pleased that the matter of site selection at last seems to be settled. From now on, attention can once again focus fully on the actual realization of a memorial that should have been erected long ago.
It is now a matter of waiting for definitive approval by the city council, which will take a decision on the issue on 22 June. Daniel Libeskind’s design for the memorial can then be adapted to meet the conditions imposed by the new site.
At long last a memorial bearing the names of ALL victims from the Netherlands who do not have a grave of their own. You can help us make that happen, by adopting names or contributing in another way. >> Click here to contribute.
Three words, ‘Auschwitz Never Again’, succinctly sum up what the Dutch Auschwitz Committee stands for. What happened during the Second World War in Auschwitz and other extermination camps may never happen again. That is why it is so important to continue to commemorate those atrocities, to pass on knowledge of them to future generations, and to remain vigilant against discrimination and serious violations of human rights.
Since its establishment in 1956, the Auschwitz Committee has vigorously pursued these goals. The annual National Holocaust Commemoration, the ‘Auschwitz Never Again’ lecture, and the visits to the former extermination camps in Poland are just some of the many activities initiated by the committee.
