I chose Jetje Wilhelmina de Vries, because she was a schoolfriend of my mother’s. I still have the poetry album that belonged to my mother, and she often spoke about the Jewish girls who were in her class and who never returned after the war.
Mam lived in the Diamantbuurt neighbourhood of Amsterdam, and there were only Jewish families living across the street from her. She witnessed all the round-ups and saw her friends disappear. In her album Jetje wrote a short verse that ends with the final line "remember me always". Jetje, on behalf of my mother (she is now dead) we will never forget your name.
Yours sincerely,
Marja van Kaam
