I’ve been living back in Amsterdam for some twenty years now, and I like it a lot. We currently live with two small children in the Plantagebuurt district, next to the Jewish synagogue, on Nieuwe Kerkstraat.
Today I adopted a name: Hanna Mok-van Gelderen. She lived at our address and died in Sobibor in 1943.
I think it’s important to always realize we must never forget the war, and that we must keep the story alive by passing it on. To pay attention to this, I have adopted the name Hanna Mok van Gelderen, who lived in our house with Reintje Mok. The occupants of the ground floor — where we now live — as well as those living on the first, second and third floors, were all deported. Let us never forget this. I would appeal to everybody to join this wonderful initiative.
Photos of our street today and in earlier times (The black-and-white photo comes from the City Archive).
