My uncle, Guillame v.d. Boogaart, died on 4 May 1945 on the Cap Arcona. The Germans were shipping him and some 9,000 other concentration camp inmates like cattle.
This was after 3 years of hardship at Neuengamme, one of the most notorious German concentration camps, where the motto was 'Work till you die'. The Allies bombed this ship, along with a number of other ships, in the Bay of Lübeck near Hamburg, because they thought there were Germans on board who wanted to flee to Sweden or Norway.
I would like to adopt his name.
