I would very much like to adopt Alida Kropveld (1935), my mother’s younger sister. The big tragedy for my granddad and grandma was that their young daughter Alida was betrayed for a few guilders by the son of the butcher from her hiding place in Honselerdijk. She was picked up on Queen’s Day and transported to Westerbork. My grandparents travelled after her, but to no avail.
Above are the last two letters she wrote to her parents, my granddad and grandma, during her time in hiding.
Ati is in the middle in this photograph. On the left is Henri van Geens, and the baby on the right is my mother. Luckily I was able to track down Henri van Geens just a few years ago in Israel and give him this picture, the only one from his childhood.
This picture of Ati stands in my living room. Every Shabbat I light a candle for her.
My grandparents never got over her loss, and the loss of almost all their other relatives.
I still have all the letters, from the people in hiding, her letters and photos, and I look after them carefully.
