VAN LIER |

We, the nine grandchildren of Anna van Duren - van Lier (1871-1937) never knew our grandmother.
Her three sons, Kees, Maurits and Hans, were crazy about their ‘Moetje’. Moetje in turn was very attached to her four brothers. There is an old studio photo from the turn of the century showing all five of them together, and there are pre-war photo albums and 8 mm films of them. Uncle Jacques, a world-famous flute player in Vienna, died before the war. His brother Meijer played the viola there. He survived the war in the ghetto in Vienna. Uncle Eduard died on 30 April 1940, probably by suicide. After the war there are empty places: Uncle Jo, Aunt Ro, their daughter Fiet and her husband Nic and their two small sons Bart and Robert were all murdered in Auschwitz and Sobibor. Cato, the daughter of Uncle Eduard, who worked in the Dutch Isrealite Hospital in Amsterdam as an apprentice nurse, died in Ravensbrück.
With our parents we scarcely ever discussed it, and now it’s impossible. By adopting their names and giving them a place on the names monument, we want to keep their memory alive.
